Karen Atkinson, Director, Side Street Projects

"Projections In Public" was a public art work consisting of a rear projection screen in a storefront window in a well-traveled area. The imagery consisted of artists works in slide form. This project was curated from artists works submitted by invitation from around the country as well as artists from the city in which the work took place. Each project was site specific to it's context, and the work was created specifically for each project and it's context of a public space. The slides were designed to function as the artwork, NOT reproductions of other work the artists had done. Asking artists to address issues for a public context and to explore this direct mode of communication with the audience produced great dialogue with viewers.

This project was shown in commercial storefront windows, such as the Bloomsbury City Flower Market in Los Angeles, which functioned as a flower market by day and an exhibition space by night.
