Open Call: Submit designs for the ‘Big Donut’

FAR has been given the unique opportunity to come up with a new design for the ‘Big Donut’ – a long time landmark located near Cal State Long Beach at the intersection of 7th Street and Pacific Coast Highway. We are currently doing an “Open Call” for the redesign and repainting of the big donut. Designs are not restricted, but should take into consideration the location and historical significance of the donut.

The donut is made of steel, with visible seams wrapping around the sides. (See photos.) Painting materials should be appropriate for outdoor use.

In conjunction with the repainting of the donut, the Daily Grind coffee shop will also undergo a design upgrade – with a vintage modern sensibility.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Designs should be submitted before Sept. 1, 2010. Photoshop jpg, Illustrator AI, or any type of digital file will be accepted. However, a PDF file which is high enough resolution to print in color is suggested. Please email to submit@farsited.org.

Scheduled re-painting of the donut will be in September, 2010 — when a lift will be used to wash and repaint the donut. Artists should be available to oversee the project, and are encouraged to help with the painting.

This is a great opportunity to have your work seen by the thousands of commuters who drive by the donut every day. Artists will be given credit for the design throughout various media releases from Daily Grind. Please note: This is a non-commissioned project.

William Cordova & Sherin Guirguis first solo exhibits at LAX ART

LAXART is presenting solo exhibitions by William Cordova and Los Angeles-based Sherin Guirguis. The exhibitions will run from April 3-May 8, 2010. Opening reception is April 3, from 6-9pm.

Cordova is an interdisciplinary artist who engages specific reclaimed materials and minimalist forms to investigate research processes, the archive, history, and the urban landscape. Guirguisʼ work references various contradictory elements, both formal and social.

FAR Seeks New Board Members

Arts Council Long Beach features 16 artists

The Arts Council for Long Beach will produce a temporary art exhibit in a 25,000 square ft. vacant building in the Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach. The exhibit is part of GLOBAL: Greater Long Beach Arts Lab in conjunction with the city’s National Arts and Humanities month. The opening will be Friday, Oct. 9 from 7pm – 10pm.

Long Beach EXPOSED will showcase the talents of emerging visual artists and will continue the dialogue about the role of alternative venues in contemporary practice. Participating artists include: James Adams, Tony Brown, Kendell Carter, Jeff Chabot, Jason Chakravarty, Gioj DeMarco, Desirée DeVirgilio, McLean Fahnestock, MLuM with Karen Crews, Melissa Ficociello, Jeff Foye and Gordon Winiemko, Karrie Hovey, Virginia Katz, Ryan Ross, Jean Robison, and Ball-Nogues Studio.

MexiCali 09/10 Biennial to launch May 24

The 2009/2010 MexiCali Biennial will be celebrated with a multi-media event on Sunday, May 24 at 8:00 p.m. The multi-media event, to be held at King King in Hollywood, CA, will feature artworks, live bands, DJs with art video projections and performances. Original artworks will be given away to random raffle ticket holders (Raffle tickets cost $10 ea. – door fee is $8). The event will be the official launch of the ’09/’10 Biennial which will begin its exhibition phase in June at La Casa del Tunel (The House of the Tunnel) located in Tijuana, Mexico.

art/tapes/22 at CSLUB

Riding on the wakes of the giant “California Video” exhibition held at the Getty, Cal State Long Beach’s University Art Museum opens a smaller but extremely relevant video exhibition. art/tapes/22, curated by Alice Hutchinson in collaboration with Maria Gloria Biocchi and the Venice Biennale, is chock full of early 70′s video projects by artists exploring the medium in its early stages.

The title of the exhibition, art/tapes/22, borrows its name from the pioneering video studio in Florence, which produced over 150 videotapes from 1973 to 1976.

The show presents video work by artists such as Vito Acconci, Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Joseph Beuys, Christian Boltanski, Chris Burden, Daniel Buren, Gino De Dominicis, Allan Kaprow, Jannis Kounellis, Urs Lüthi, Giulio Paolini, and Bill Viola.

It just so happens, that Long Beach’s Bill Viola served as art/tapes/22 technical director from 1974-76. What brings even more relevance to the Long Beach exhibition is the fact that the last show of these tapes, curated by David Ross, was at the Long Beach Museum of Art.

Most of the works in the exhibition are black & white, with a few exceptions. The videos are presented on TV sets reminiscent of the 70′s. Larger works are projected on the wall, and sixteen of the works are viewed on CRT studio monitors set up in rows of four.

A highlight of the exhibition is a Chris Burden work “The Guru of Detroit” (1975) in which two sitting figures are half cropped out of the frame. One of them, “The Guru”, rambles on about machine parts and how Detroit fits into the industrial revolution.

One of the only color works was the first reconstruction of a 1974 work conceived by artist Daniel Buren. The installation consisted of 5 images displayed on different monitors but transmitting a simultaneous pattern.

The show will be open until October 19th at UAM – University Art Museum at CSLUB.

‘FAR News’ launched

FAR (Foundation for Art Resources) has launched this news based site with the hopes of keeping visitors informed about local exhibitions, happenings in the art world, and whatever else we think you may find interesting. Caroline intends to write about her experience at the Glow festival in Santa Monica, while Gabriel promises to post some of his favorite recipes.

You’ll also find announcements about upcoming FAR projects, helpful artist information, and ways you can help fund FAR programming.
